FROM THE EDITOR

Welding Division Gains ISO 9001: 2000
British Standards Institution (BSI) carried out an initial audit of the Welding Division at Burton to ISO 9001: 2000 on 4 May 2004. Only four minor non-conformities were raised and BSI recommended an extension to the company's scope of registration to include the Welding Division. The BSI auditor, John Williams, stated in his audit report, "No complaints had been made directly relating to welding provision, a compliment had been received however, for the flexibility and speed of response to the customers needs. Well Done."

We echo that sentiment. Well done to Quality Manager James Bailey and to all Welding Division staff involved, in particular Welding Manager Fred Hawksworth.

Applied Inspection Authorised to Conduct GM/RT 2005 NDT Facilities Assessments
Following discussions with Rail Safety, Applied Inspection and the British Institute of NDT have been authorised to conduct GM/RT 2005 NDT facilities assessments across the Rail Industry. The assessments will be underwritten by the British Institute and carried out by PCN/ASNT Level 3 Assessors employed by Applied Inspection. Success in the assessment will result in the applicant organisation receiving a certificate of compliance from the BINDT Certification Services Division, a UKAS accredited (EN 45012, EN 45013) Certification Body.

This achievement acknowledges that Applied Inspection is recognised as a leading authority for NDT in the UK Rail Industry.

Well Done Ossett Staff
The following email was received from Andrew Hick of Hindle Cockburns Limited: "I just wanted to drop an email to you and all of your staff to thank them on behalf of Hindle Cockburns Limited for their continuing efforts and excellent service provided. Hindle have currently been asking for very quick turn-round times (due to pressure from our customers to achieve ever tighter delivery dates) and have requested Applied Inspection work extra unsociable hours to meet these demands. The response from Applied Inspection has been very professional. I hope we can continue to build on such a good relationship between the two companies. Applied Inspection are Hindle's preferred supplier of NDT Services."

Joke of the Month

An Irishman went to the dentist and had all of his teeth taken out. His wife said, "How did it go?" He replied, "I shan't be doing that again."

5-a-side Football - Re-match, AEA Technology v Applied Inspection
The re-match date arrived on 19 May at JJB Sports Centre, Pride Park, Derby. Applied Inspection could only field 5 players, or put it another way 4 players plus one old man (Me). The match kicked off at 6.30 pm.

Applied Inspection started well, man to man marking. Then they split the AEA defence wide open but couldn't find the net. All of a sudden Applied Inspection were 2-0 up, Danny Chester and Dave Slater taking the ball out wide and opening the game right up. Dave kept on skying the ball but to be fair he was playing with a handicap; he was playing with Pat Slater's trainers. Jez (Jeremy Hodgkins) and Gossy (Paul Goss) stood firm in defence and made some good penetrating runs. AEA peppered the Applied Inspection goal but the old man stood firm.

By half time the score was 3-2 to Applied Inspection. The second half kicked off and the half was tight on both sides. As the last 15 minutes approached AEA seemed to gain a little more momentum, they came level, then with less than 5 minutes to go it was 7-3 to AEA, then 7-4. All the lads played really well and Applied Inspection should be very proud. There is yet another match to be played, date to be arranged.
