If the keyboard isn't live, then the gap between his real self and his ideal self (or the 'I am' and the 'I should') is great. The bigger the gap, the more the need for defense mechanisms; denial, distortion of facts etc to bridge that 'reality' gap.

Defense mechanisms almost always, sooner or later, lead to maladaptive ways of dealing with the world; a Personality Disorder.
